You will be able to watch live TV on mobile without internet! HMD is bringing D2M phone to India
It will now be possible to watch live TV and OTT content without internet from mobile phones in India. HMD Global has announced that it is preparing to launch phones equipped with Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) technology in India. The company made this announcement during the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025 being held at Jio World Centre in Mumbai. Here we are telling you about this technology in detail.
What is Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) technology?
D2M is a brand new broadcasting technology, with the help of which OTT, live TV, video, audio and text messages can be delivered directly to mobile phones without Wi-Fi or internet. The company says that it will also strengthen Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Developed India’ and ‘Make in India’ and ‘Design in India’ campaigns.
Who is HMD working with?
HMD has joined hands with Free Stream Technologies (incubated from IIT Kanpur) and other D2M partners in this mission. Apart from this, local chipsets and technology made by Tejas Networks are also being used, which has successfully tested this technology on Indian networks in the last few years.
Ravi Kunwar (VP and CEO, HMD India and APAC) said on this occasion, “HMD has always been at the forefront of innovation. We are excited to give a better experience to the users through the D2M platform.”
At the same time, Sumit Nindrajog (Director, Free Stream Technologies) said, “D2M technology can change the way of content delivery and the support of companies like HMD will help spread it across the country.”
Parag Naik (Co-founder, Saankhya Labs and EVP, Tejas Networks) said on this occasion that the company has developed the SL-3000 chipset and core network platform, which will enable ads, educational content and emergency alerts to be delivered directly to the users.
HMD’s focus is now on making D2M phones available in the Indian market after large-scale trials. Soon, users will be able to buy such smartphones, feature phones and tablets at low prices, in which entertainment and important information will be available directly from TV broadcast even without internet.
