iPhone manufacturing started in Tata Group’s new factory

Manufacturing of Apple’s iPhone has grown rapidly in the country in the last few years. Manufacturing of iPhones has been started in Tata Group’s Tata Electronics’ new factory in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. China has a major stake in the manufacturing of iPhones. However, Apple has planned to increase the manufacturing of iPhones in India to avoid heavy tariffs imposed by the US on imports from China.

Older models of iPhones will be made on an assembly line in this factory of Tata Electronics. A Reuters report quoted sources with knowledge of this matter as saying that manufacturing of iPhones will also be started soon in the factory being built near Bengaluru in Karnataka by Foxconn, Apple’s largest contract manufacturer. 300-500 units of iPhone can be made every hour in this factory. iPhone 16 and 16e will be assembled in it. It is estimated that about 50,000 jobs will be created when this factory reaches full capacity.

Tata Electronics, Apple and Foxconn did not respond to requests for comment on this matter. China has more than 75 percent share in the manufacturing of iPhones. Foxconn’s revenue in India has more than doubled in the last financial year to about Rs 1.7 lakh crore. The number of Foxconn workers has increased by 65 percent. Foxconn has about 80,000 workers in the country. This Taiwanese company is the largest manufacturer of iPhones.

Recently, Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had said that in the last financial year, iPhone’s share in the export of smartphones from the country was about Rs 1.5 lakh crore. He had said that guidelines would be issued in the next few weeks for the government’s Rs 22,919 crore Electronics Components Scheme. This year, Foxconn plans to assemble about 30 million units of iPhone. Foxconn may benefit from the tax exemption announced on import of smartphone parts in this year’s budget. Apple also plans to start manufacturing AirPods, MacBook and iPad in the country. Manufacturing of AirPods for export can be started soon at Foxconn’s Hyderabad plant.
