‘Starlink’ gets approval in preparation to bring satellite internet to India, will get fast internet service
The Indian government has given the green signal to American billionaire Elon Musk’s company Starlink to start satellite internet service in the country. According to government sources, the Department of Telecommunications (DOT) has issued a ‘Letter of Intent’ (LOI) to Starlink. This means that the company can now take the next step to start its services in India.
Other companies have already got the license
Before Starlink, Eutelsat OneWeb and Jio Satellite Communications have got the license for satellite internet service in India. Now with the joining of Starlink, both competition and options will increase.
What is Starlink and how does it work?
Starlink is a project of American company SpaceX, which was started in 2002 by the world’s richest man Elon Musk. Starlink aims to deliver high-speed, low-latency internet to every corner of the world, that too through satellite.
Fast internet will be available from LEO satellite
Starlink is different from other traditional satellite services. While usually the satellites providing internet are about 36,000 kilometers away from the earth (geostationary orbit), Starlink’s network is in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which is only 550 kilometers above. At present, Starlink has a network of 7,000 satellites, but in the coming time there is a plan to increase it to 40,000 satellites. With this technology, people will not only be able to get fast internet, but will also be able to use facilities like online gaming, video calling and streaming without interruption.
Expectation of internet revolution in rural areas
Starlink’s services are considered especially beneficial for those areas where broadband internet has not yet reached, such as hilly, rural and remote areas. The government hopes that this will also give new impetus to the Digital India campaign. Now Starlink will have to complete the remaining formalities, such as spectrum allotment and preparation for domestic partnerships. Starlink is expected to start its service in India in the coming months.
