CCPA action on 13 e-commerce companies including Amazon-Flipkart: Notice sent for illegal sale of walkie-talkie amid India-Pakistan tension, authority will also bring guidelines
Amid the situation of India-Pakistan war, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued notices to 13 e-commerce companies like Amazon-Flipkart for illegal sale of walkie-talkie devices on their platforms. CCPA gave this information in an official statement on Friday (May 9).
CCPA said that 13 notices have been issued to major digital marketplaces against illegal listing and sale of walkie-talkies on e-commerce platforms. These platforms are Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, OLX, Trade India, Facebook, Indiamart, Vardanmart, Jiomart, Krishnamart, Chimia, Talk Pro Walkie Talkie and Mask Man Toy.
This action is focused on the sale of walkie-talkies without proper frequency disclosure, licensing information and Equipment Type Approval (ETA), which is a violation of the Consumer Protection Act-2019.
What did Union Food and Consumer Minister Pralhad Joshi say?
Earlier, Union Food and Consumer Minister Pralhad Joshi said in a social media post, ‘The sale of non-compliant wireless devices not only violates statutory obligations. But, it can also pose a risk to national security operations.’
CCPA will issue guidelines under the Consumer Protection Act
Pralhad Joshi said that these violate several legal frameworks including the Consumer Protection Act, Indian Telegraph Act and Wireless Telegraphy Act.
He said that the CCPA will issue formal guidelines under Section 18(2)(l) of the Consumer Protection Act-2019. The purpose of which is to strengthen compliance and consumer protection measures in the digital marketplace.
Pralhad Joshi said that instructions have been given to strictly follow all applicable regulatory standards to maintain consumer rights and prevent illegal trade practices.
