Job threat from AI? LinkedIn fired hundreds of employees from tech team, know the reason

LinkedIn has once again done a large-scale layoff. The company has shown the way out to a total of 281 employees from the US state of California. This layoff has been done in the company’s technical teams like engineering, machine learning, infrastructure, DevOps and design. According to the report of SF Gate, this move is part of Microsoft’s larger structure realignment, under which about 6,000 employees are being laid off worldwide.

These employees fired from LinkedIn’s team are from different offices in California. SFGate’s report shows that out of these, 159 people have been fired from Mountain View office, 60 from San Francisco, 23 from Sunnyvale and 11 from Carpinteria. Apart from this, there are also 28 such employees who were working in remote roles. Earlier, the company had reportedly fired 716 people in 2023 as well.

The report further states that LinkedIn’s parent company Microsoft had already indicated that there would be major changes in the team structure due to automation and AI. According to TechCrunch, CEO Satya Nadella himself said in April that now about 30% of the code being written in the company is being generated by AI, that is, the need for human developers is decreasing in many places.

However, LinkedIn has not yet issued any official statement regarding this latest layoff, nor has anything been clarified about the severance package or future layoff plan. The report also revealed that the fired employees are now posting on LinkedIn themselves in search of new jobs and are actively expanding the network.

This layoff by LinkedIn has joined the list of many Silicon Valley companies that are reducing their workforce due to the increasing influence of AI.
