Apple gave the contract of iPhone repair in India to Tata Group
In the last few years, iPhone sales have grown rapidly in the country. American devices maker Apple has given the contract of repairing iPhones and MacBooks in the country to Tata Group. A company of Tata Group is already assembling iPhones. Apple’s plan to shift some part of its manufacturing from China includes increasing manufacturing in India.
A Reuters report quoted sources with knowledge of the matter as saying that earlier this contract was with ICT Service Management Solutions, a unit of Taiwan’s Wistron in India. Apple’s devices will be repaired at the factory of the Tata Group company which assembles iPhones in Karnataka. With the increase in sales of iPhones in India, the world’s second largest smartphone market, the market for repairing these devices will also grow. According to an estimate by Counterpoint Research, about 1.1 crore iPhones were sold in the country last year.
Apple and Wistron did not respond to requests for comment. A Tata Group spokesperson declined to comment. Apple opened two retail stores in India about two years ago. The company plans to open new stores in the country soon. Earlier this year, Apple CEO Tim Cook had said that the company plans to open four new stores in the country. The company’s existing stores are in Delhi and Mumbai.
Apple plans to open new stores in Sky City Mall in Borivali, Mumbai and Phoenix Mall of Asia in Bengaluru. Earlier, a media report had said that workers have been hired for these stores for the last few months. Apart from this, two stores of the company can be opened in DLF Mall of India in Noida in Uttar Pradesh and Kopa Mall in Pune in Maharashtra. The combined revenue of Apple’s two existing stores in the first year of sales was about Rs 800 crore. In this, the share of Saket store in Delhi was 60 percent.
