Hundreds of workers laid off from Amazon, major impact on cloud division

American e-commerce and technology company Amazon has laid off hundreds of workers in its cloud computing division. However, the exact number of jobs cut in Amazon Web Services (AWS) is not known. Earlier also a large number of workers were removed from Amazon.

A Reuters report states that this layoff has affected many teams in AWS. In this regard, an Amazon spokesperson said, “AWS has made a difficult business decision to eliminate some roles from special teams. Such decisions are necessary because more resources are being used along with investment to deliver innovation to our customers.” Many workers who came under the purview of this layoff said that they were informed through email that their positions have been eliminated.

This has affected many teams in AWS. One of these teams is called ‘Specialists’. This team works with customers to develop new product ideas and support sales of existing AWS services. Recently, Amazon reduced staff in its book-related business. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy’s strategy is to speed up the decision-making process in the company and make work more efficient. Amazon has set a target of increasing the ratio of individual contributors and managers by 15 percent, so that bureaucracy can be reduced.

Recently, Amazon has entered a new business segment like quick-commerce in India. The company has started a new division Amazon Now for this. This service of Amazon can give tough competition to Zomato’s Blinkit, Swiggy’s Instamart and Zepto in this segment. These three companies have a large share in the quick-commerce market. These companies offer delivery of everything from groceries to gadgets like smartphones in less than 15 minutes. Amazon, which has a major share in the e-commerce market, offers its regular delivery service where products are delivered on the same day or within a few days.
