Microsoft will expel workers who protested against violence in Gaza
Microsoft, one of the largest IT companies, has decided to take strict action against workers who protested against violence in Gaza. Microsoft President, Brad Smith, has made it clear that workers who participate in Gaza-related protests inside the office will be dismissed.
According to a report by Business Insider, he has justified the decision to expel four workers who sat on a dharna in Smith’s office last month. Due to the continuing violence in Gaza, many Microsoft workers are requesting the company to end its tie-up with the Israeli army. Smith said that the company has hired law firm Covington & Burling to investigate the claims of Israel using Microsoft technology to monitor the people of Palestine.
Smith said that a person who succeeds in getting a job in Microsoft will definitely know that you cannot forcefully enter buildings and occupy other people’s offices and at the same time you cannot retain your job in Microsoft. Former Microsoft engineer, Riki Fameli, said that Smith’s comments led to protests in such a way that it became easy for the company’s management to ignore opposing voices. Riki was also fired from her job for participating in a protest in support of Gaza.
In a company meeting, Smith said that Microsoft is committed to human rights. He said that the company is investigating the claims that its technology is being used to monitor the people of Palestine. Along with this, Microsoft is also preparing a new system through which its workers will be able to report such apprehensions which are related to the misuse of the company’s technology by any client. Earlier also, workers in some American companies had raised their voice in support of Gaza and against Israel. However, this issue was suppressed due to the strict attitude of the companies regarding this.
