Users can now make UPI payments using glasses, no need for a mobile phone – check the details

In India, payments can now be made using the UPI Lite feature through wearable smart glasses. Users simply need to scan a QR code and enter a voice command. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) said on Tuesday that this feature requires neither a mobile phone nor a PIN. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Deputy Governor T. Rabi Shankar announced the launch of this new digital payment feature at the Global Fintech Fest 2025 here.

UPI Lite was developed for small, recurring payments.

It should be noted that UPI Lite has been developed specifically for small, recurring payments with minimal dependence on the mainstream banking system. NPCI released a video explaining that making payments with UPI Lite through smartglasses is as simple as “look, speak, pay.” This feature is targeted at everyday payments such as retail, food, and transportation, and makes digital payments easier and seamless.

UPI’s First Expansion into Wearable Environments

NPCI stated that this initiative is the first expansion of UPI into wearable environments and is considered an important step towards “seamless, ambient payments.” Banks and payment service providers will also benefit, as non-CBS (core banking system) wallet transactions will reduce pressure on the mainstream banking system.

A Key Initiative to Position India at the Top of Global Digital Payment Innovations

NPCI stated that UPI Lite payments through wearable smartglasses will be a key initiative to position India at the top of global digital payment innovations. NPCI, which operates the country’s retail payment and settlement system, also owns UPI.
