Health, Agriculture, Education, Sustainable Growth: Google to Invest Millions of Dollars in AI in India
To propel India towards global AI leadership, Google has announced significant new investments and partnerships in sectors such as health, agriculture, education, and sustainable development. These announcements were made at the Lab to Impact program held on Tuesday, in collaboration with the India AI Impact Summit 2026. The largest portion of this investment, $8 million, has been allocated to four AI Centers of Excellence established by the Indian government (IISc Bangalore, IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras, and IIT Ropar), which will focus on areas such as health, agriculture, education, and urban governance.
Wadhwani AI has received $4.5 million in funding to develop AI solutions for healthcare (Health Vaani) and agriculture (Agrivaani/Garuda). $2 million has been allocated for the establishment of the ‘Indic Language Technologies Research Hub’ at IIT Bombay to promote linguistic diversity. $400,000 has been provided for the development of India’s Health Foundation Model, and grants of $50,000 each have been given to various AI startups and research projects (such as Gnani.AI, CoRover.AI, BharatGen, and IIT Bombay’s Gemma project). Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan was also present at the event.
Centers of Excellence
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan stated that India views Artificial Intelligence as a strategic national capability. The four AI Centers of Excellence have been designed as a coordinated national research mission, advancing fundamental research, responsible AI, and applications that benefit the public. This also contributes to our larger goal of a developed India by 2047. Dr. Manish Gupta, Senior Research Director at Google DeepMind, said that AI has the power to accelerate scientific discoveries, augment human capabilities, and transform the world, and India, with its large-scale adoption, can lead this AI-driven future.
