JSW Group to Enter Passenger Vehicle Market with New In-House Brand

The Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Group is preparing to enter the Indian passenger vehicle market with its own in-house brand. According to media reports, in addition to its existing partnership with JSW MG Motor India, the group aims to launch its first vehicle through its new unit, JSW Motors, in the third quarter of the next financial year (December quarter). This move signifies JSW’s significant presence in the world’s third-largest automobile market.

Speaking at the World Hindu Economic Forum, JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal said the group is working on cutting-edge technology partnerships with several countries, including China, Germany, and the UK. He stated that under JSW Motors, the company will focus on hybrid and electric vehicles and plans to bring world-class technologies to India.

Business to Enter Clean Fuel Segment

JSW’s passenger vehicle business will enter the clean fuel segment, where the company will challenge established players like Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Hyundai Motor India, and Maruti Suzuki with its hybrid and electric vehicles. The group is also finalizing partnerships for a lithium-ion battery business, which will power both passenger and commercial vehicles.

Sajjan Jindal stated that a technical partnership for lithium-ion batteries is underway and the facility will be established in Nagpur. The JSW Group plans to develop a battery capacity of up to 50 GWh in this sector, which will strengthen the EV ecosystem in India.

Existing Presence in the Automobile Sector through MG Motor

It is worth noting that the JSW Group already has a presence in the automobile sector through JSW MG Motor India, a joint venture with the Chinese company SAIC since 2023.  Indian investors, including the JSW Group and Everstone Capital, hold a 51 percent stake in this company. Now, the Indian consortium plans to increase its stake in MG Motor India to more than 51 percent. Although MG Motor India’s sales are growing rapidly and it has become the country’s second-largest EV manufacturer, the JSW Group is now taking steps to establish an independent identity in India’s automobile sector by creating a completely new, indigenous auto brand.
