India is becoming a semiconductor hub! Micron launches the country’s first chip unit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Micron Technology’s semiconductor unit in Gujarat. This is India’s first semiconductor assembly and test facility, built in Sanand. This move will reduce India’s dependence on foreign chips and will prove to be a significant step towards playing a major role in the global chip supply chain.

A New Era for India

Prime Minister Modi said, “This marks the beginning of a new era of technology for India.” He said, “When young Indians look back in the future, they will consider this decade a turning point in our technology future.”

Made in India chips will be ready

This Indian semiconductor unit converts advanced semiconductor wafers from Micron’s global network into finished memory and storage products. Commercial production and shipment of “Made in India” semiconductor memory modules has now begun. India’s semiconductor market is projected to grow from $38 billion in 2023 to $45-50 billion in 2024-25. The government aims to reach $110 billion by 2030.

More semiconductor projects will soon begin

Ten chip projects worth over $18 billion are underway in the national capital, including two advanced 3-nanometer design facilities in Noida and Bengaluru. Modi said that at least three more semiconductor projects will soon begin production, adding, “India, known for software, is now making its mark in hardware as well.”
