Nokia may enter into a new partnership for manufacturing smartphones
Nokia, which once had a large market share in mobile phones, is looking for partners to manufacture its phones. This Finnish company has an international licensing agreement with HMD Global. HMD also has its own phone division. It started marketing Nokia devices under its own branding last year.
Nokia is considering ways to sell smartphones with its own brand. In a post on Reddit, Nokia’s community manager has asked major mobile manufacturers who want to partner with them to contact the company through its website. This indicates that the company is considering ways to sell smartphones with its own branding. Nokia’s 10-year licensing agreement with HMD Global is ending next year. However, it is possible that this agreement may be renewed.
HMD Global was started in 2016 by former Nokia executives. Their aim was to make the Nokia brand popular again. For this, HMD had signed a 10-year licensing agreement for manufacturing and marketing Nokia phones. Nokia phones were sold by American tech company Microsoft under Lumia branding for some time. In February last year, HMD Global decided to launch Android smartphones with its own branding. It removed Nokia’s branding from its smartphones and limited it to some feature phones.
Next year, Nokia will have the freedom to sell its license to any other mobile manufacturer, which can market and distribute smartphones with its branding. However, Nokia or HMD Global have not given information about their plans after the agreement ends next year. Nokia had said in its annual report two years ago that its sales have declined but the company is in a better position due to its patent licensing agreement. For this reason, licensing of patents and technologies is important for the company.
