Postal service to America is now completely suspended: Booking of documents and gifts up to ₹ 8700 is also banned, decision due to American tariff
The Indian Postal Department has temporarily banned all types of postal services to America. This decision has been taken due to ambiguity in the new rules of the Customs Department after America’s 50 percent tariff.
This also includes letters, documents and gift items up to $ 100. Earlier, the Postal Department had banned all parcels except these categories from August 25.
The department said on Sunday that this ban will continue until the situation becomes clear and airlines are ready to carry postal parcels going to America.
The Postal Department said – Those who have already made bookings but the goods could not be sent, can get a refund of the postage. We are monitoring the situation and efforts are being made to restore the service as soon as possible.
Earlier, goods worth up to Rs 70,000 were duty free
After the implementation of the extra tariff, from August 29, all international postal items going to the US will have to pay custom duty as per the country-specific International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) tariff structure. No matter what their price is.
However, letters, documents and gift items worth up to $100 (about Rs 8,700) will still be exempted from duty, but the rules are not clear for this as well. Due to this, airlines are not carrying these either. At the same time, before August 29, goods worth up to $800 i.e. about Rs 70,000 were duty free.
