Major Helicopter Manufacturing Agreement in India: Adani and Italian Company Sign Deal

The Adani Group and Leonardo, a leading Italian aerospace and defense company, announced a strategic partnership on Tuesday to establish an integrated helicopter manufacturing ecosystem in India. This move is considered crucial in strengthening the Make in India initiative and enhancing India’s self-reliance in helicopter manufacturing.

What is the focus of the manufacturing ecosystem?

Under this partnership, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Adani Defence & Aerospace and Leonardo at an event held in New Delhi. The proposed manufacturing ecosystem will focus on meeting the needs of the Indian armed forces, particularly for Leonardo’s advanced AW169M and AW109 TrekkerM military helicopters.

According to a statement released by the companies, this collaboration will include phased indigenization, the development of robust maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capabilities, and comprehensive pilot training. This will boost domestic capabilities in both the defense and civil aviation sectors.

What is the status of helicopter availability in India?

The availability of helicopters in India is currently quite low. The country has a helicopter density of less than 250 per capita, while India is estimated to require approximately 100 new helicopters every year over the next 10 years.

This partnership will cater to both civil and defense needs – Jeet Adani

Jeet Adani, Director of Adani Defence & Aerospace, said that this partnership is laying the foundation for an aviation ecosystem that will cater to both civil and defense needs. He said that their collaboration with Leonardo is based not only on shared expertise but also on a shared purpose. They will create an ecosystem on Indian soil that will provide manufacturing, assembly, training, and world-class support all in one place. Adani Defence and Aerospace CEO Ashish Rajvanshi said that the Indian armed forces have projected a demand for more than 1,000 helicopters over the next decade. This partnership is a major step towards realizing the vision of sovereign defense manufacturing.

India is a big market for Leonardo

Meanwhile, Gian Piero Cutillo, Managing Director of Leonardo Helicopters, said that India is a large and strategic market where the armed forces’ demand for helicopters is constantly growing.

Partnership with Embraer also announced last week

Notably, this announcement comes just a week after Adani Defence and Aerospace announced a strategic collaboration with Brazilian aerospace major Embraer to establish a regional aircraft manufacturing facility in India.
