OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s company is working on a new type of smartphone, which is being dubbed the “AI-first phone” within the tech world. According to reports, this device will not be based on traditional Android or iOS operating systems; instead, it will be a device powered entirely by artificial intelligence. It is believed that production for this device could commence around the year 2028.
Regarding this project, it is reported that the company has partnered with major tech firms to secure hardware support. These partners include chip manufacturers such as Qualcomm and MediaTek. Additionally, the company is collaborating with Luxshare for the device’s design and manufacturing.
According to reports, the user interface on this device could also be completely reimagined. It is expected to reduce reliance on individual applications, allowing an AI-driven system to handle the majority of tasks. For instance, if a user verbally requests to send an email or book a ticket, the phone could autonomously complete the task.
Furthermore, it is anticipated that the phone will utilize cloud-based AI technology. This implies that computationally intensive tasks will be processed in the cloud, while essential and personal data will be processed securely on the device locally. This approach would enable the phone to operate with greater speed and intelligence.
In terms of design, the phone is expected to feature four primary sections: Home, Actions, Memory, and Inbox. This system will be entirely task-oriented, with the phone serving as a digital assistant to assist the user. Although OpenAI has not yet issued an official announcement regarding this project, it has already generated significant excitement within the tech industry. If this device successfully reaches the market, it could mark a transformative shift in the smartphone landscape—evolving the device from a mere tool into an intelligent AI companion.
