Government May Impose Restrictions on Social Media Use by Children in India

In recent months, several countries have taken steps to curb the negative impact of social media on children. The Central Government in India is also considering imposing restrictions on social media usage by children. This could involve banning access to social media platforms for children under the age of 16.

A media report citing Electronics and IT Secretary S. Krishnan states that many countries worldwide have tightened regulations regarding children’s access to social media due to growing concerns about online safety, mental health, the addictive design of these platforms, and harmful content. Krishnan noted that global developments are being observed before a decision is made on the matter. He stated, “We need to study what other countries have done regarding social media. This is an issue of global concern.”

Last year, Australia became the first country to ban social media for children under 16. Subsequently, other nations have taken similar measures. Recently, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) joined this list, banning social media for children under the age of 15. Many European countries are also preparing to formulate stricter rules regarding social media use by children. Krishnan mentioned that similar concerns are emerging in India as well. He explained, “Concerns regarding the risks associated with social media have consistently surfaced during our discussions with the European Union and other nations. In India, too, various stakeholders—including parliamentary standing committees—have deliberated on these risks.” Krishnan clarified that no final decision has been taken yet.

Last month, the UK also announced plans to ban social media for children under the age of 16. This ban could cover platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, and X. However, instant messaging apps WhatsApp and Signal could be excluded from the scope of this ban.
