IndiGo’s Major Decision Following CCI Scrutiny: Relinquishing Airport Slots During Crises—How Will Passengers Benefit?
India’s largest airline, IndiGo, is currently under pressure as the Competition Commission of India (CCI) investigates the carrier. This probe was initiated following a major flight disruption crisis in December 2025. IndiGo has now made several significant commitments to the Commission, ranging from crisis management measures to proposals for relinquishing airport slots. If approved, these measures could reduce inconvenience for passengers in the future.
Why did the CCI initiate the investigation?
IndiGo’s flight operations were severely disrupted in December 2025. Thousands of flights were cancelled, and many others faced long delays, causing hardship for lakhs of passengers. Consequently, the CCI ordered an investigation in February 2026. The Commission held the view that IndiGo’s actions reduced flight availability in the market and adversely affected competition.
What proposals has IndiGo made?
During the investigation, IndiGo made five major commitments. The airline stated that it would handle such situations more effectively in the future. If the CCI approves these proposals, the investigation could be closed. Currently, the Commission has invited public suggestions, and a final decision will be taken after considering this feedback.
What will the airline do during a crisis?
IndiGo will establish a Crisis Management Group (CMG) comprising senior officials; this team will make immediate decisions during crises. The airline will also set up a 24-hour ‘Customer Experience War Room’ to promptly resolve passenger grievances. Arrangements for food and beverages at airports will be enhanced, with additional vendors engaged if necessary. Efforts will be made to provide passengers with alternative flights, and refund processes will be expedited.
Why will IndiGo relinquish airport slots?
IndiGo holds ‘prime slots’—designated times for take-off and landing—at several major airports. The airline has now stated that, during a major crisis, it could temporarily hand over some slots to the airport authority. This would allow other airlines to utilize those slots, preventing a sudden drop in the number of flights and making it easier for passengers to find alternative flight options.
