L&T Bags ‘Mega Order’ Worth Over ₹10,000 Crore; To Build India’s Largest NVIDIA B300 AI Factory in Chennai
L&T has not disclosed the exact value of this order but has termed it a ‘Mega Order.’ This classification provides a clue regarding its value. According to L&T’s internal order classification system, orders worth ₹1,000–2,500 crore are categorized as ‘Significant,’ ₹2,500–5,000 crore as ‘Large,’ ₹5,000–10,000 crore as ‘Major,’ and ₹10,000–15,000 crore as ‘Mega.’ Orders exceeding ₹15,000 crore fall into the ‘Ultra-Mega’ category. Thus, based on the information provided by L&T, this order falls within the ₹10,000 crore to ₹15,000 crore range, although the company has not specified the exact figure.
What the order entails
Don’t let the term “AI factory” lead you to believe that goods will be manufactured here like in a typical factory. Simply put, this will be a massive, high-performance computing center equipped with thousands of extremely powerful GPUs. These will be used to train and refine large AI models and to rapidly execute complex AI-related tasks.
The project has been secured by LTN Compute, the AI infrastructure subsidiary of L&T’s Vyoma.AI. It will be set up at a data center in Chennai.
To feature 10,000 NVIDIA B300 GPUs
A single figure is enough to grasp the scale of this project: according to L&T, this AI factory will have a capacity of 10,000 NVIDIA B300 GPUs. It will be hosted at Vyoma’s Chennai data center.
GPU stands for Graphics Processing Unit. Simply put, these are incredibly powerful computing chips that are currently being used extensively to run and train large AI systems.
The entire system will encompass facilities such as large data centers, high-performance networking, ultra-fast storage, and AI infrastructure operations.
How large is the Chennai campus?
According to L&T, the ‘Vyoma’ data center campus in Chennai is a gigawatt-scale AI infrastructure site. Its first phase is designed for a capacity of 250 megawatts, with power infrastructure prepared for 150 MVA. The company states that this will provide the foundation for the future expansion of the AI factory.
The implication is clear: L&T is not merely building a small project based on current needs; it is also incorporating the scope to scale up capacity in the future.
