Airtel Launches FREE Satellite Internet! Deal with SpaceX; Apps Like WhatsApp Will Work Without Mobile Network

Airtel has launched free satellite-powered mobile connectivity. Airtel Africa has partnered with SpaceX to provide mobile connectivity via Starlink satellite internet services. Under this initiative, the company is offering free satellite-to-mobile connectivity to users. This means that users in areas lacking mobile towers or network coverage will now have access to internet connectivity—completely free of charge! The company is offering this free satellite-to-mobile connectivity for a period of 30 days. Let’s look at the details.

Airtel has rolled out satellite-powered mobile connectivity for users in Africa, offering the service for free for 30 days. The launch has taken place in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Users now have a new way to stay connected without relying on traditional mobile network coverage. According to a report by Telecom Talk, Airtel Africa launched this service in partnership with SpaceX, the company owned by Elon Musk, which provides Starlink satellite internet services.

WhatsApp Will Now Work Without SIM Data

Satellite-to-mobile connectivity does not require SIM-based data; the internet connection comes directly from the satellite. However, the company has stated that, for now, only apps like WhatsApp—which require minimal data—will function on this service. In other words, only “light-data” apps, including SMS connectivity, will be supported.

Registration Mandatory

Users must register to avail of this service. Registration can be done via the MyAirtel app, and the service will be provided only to eligible users. Currently, the service is available on supported Android smartphones, and terms and conditions apply.

Airtel states that this launch marks a new direction for the partnership between Airtel Africa and SpaceX. The aim is to provide connectivity to remote and underserved areas. Compatible smartphones can now connect directly to satellite internet without requiring standard mobile network coverage. Customers will not need satellite phones or Starlink dishes for this. However, a clear view of the sky is required for optimal service; connectivity may be affected inside buildings or in locations where satellite signals are obstructed.
