Rising Demand for Tesla Model Y in India; Sales Cross 1,000 Units

Tesla, a major player in the global electric vehicle (EV) market, is seeing an increase in sales in India. Deliveries of the Tesla Model Y have surpassed 1,000 units since September of last year. Billionaire Elon Musk’s company achieved its highest monthly sales in the country in September, selling 291 units.

Last month, sales in the country’s electric passenger vehicle market stood at 35,048 units. This represents a year-on-year growth of approximately 95.4 percent in the market. Tata Motors retains the top spot in the electric passenger vehicle market with sales of 14,792 units. In the luxury electric passenger vehicle segment, BMW held the number one position in September with sales of 502 units. Tesla secured the second spot, overtaking Mercedes-Benz; Mercedes-Benz recorded sales of 125 units in September.

Tesla is witnessing high demand from major cities, including Bengaluru and Hyderabad. The company commenced operations in India in July of last year. However, sales have remained significantly below expectations, primarily due to the high prices of its EVs resulting from steep import duties. The company sold 226 units in the country last year. It operates showrooms in Delhi, Gurugram, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. Tesla offers two variants of the Model Y: Premium RWD and L Premium AWD. The company also launched the Model Y L in the country a few months ago.

The price of the Model Y L is approximately ₹61.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Tesla has also introduced financing plans for the vehicle. Last year, the company introduced the Model Y L in China. It is a long-wheelbase, three-row version of the company’s standard Model Y. This electric SUV features six seats and is ideal for customers requiring more cabin space. The Model Y L is manufactured at the company’s Gigafactory in Shanghai, China. Tesla claims that the Model Y L can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately five seconds. For safety, it is equipped with beltline airbags in the second row and side airbags in the third row.
