Beyond Telecom: Preparing to Develop Proprietary Technology from AI to 6G; Understanding Jio’s Grand Plan Through 6,817 Patents
A decade ago, Jio revolutionized the way India used the internet. Now, the company’s next objective goes beyond merely acquiring more subscribers. Jio is preparing to develop its own technology, AI, and patents, aiming to take them from India to the global stage.
Jio Moving Beyond Telecom
When Jio entered the Indian market in 2016, it established itself as a telecom company known for affordable data, high-speed networks, and a rapidly growing subscriber base. However, the company no longer views itself solely as a telecom operator. Its focus has shifted toward developing and deploying technology, with plans to eventually expand into other markets.
Akash Ambani, Managing Director of Jio Platforms, highlighted this transformation during the company’s 10th-anniversary celebrations. He stated that Jio is no longer just a telecom company; it is developing indigenous technology across sectors such as connectivity, digital products, enterprise solutions, and AI.
6,817 Patents Filed; 1,009 Granted Approval
Jio’s patent statistics are crucial to understanding this shift in focus. By March 31, 2026, Jio Platforms and its subsidiaries had filed a total of 6,817 patents. These cover technologies such as 4G, 5G, 6G, Artificial Intelligence, and cloud computing. Of these, 1,009 patents had received approval globally.
Jio Platforms climbed 320 places to secure the 20th spot in the 2025 published PCT application rankings. According to the company, it became the only Indian technology company to feature in this global top-20 list. Focus on its 5G technology
Jio did not merely focus on deploying the network; it also worked towards developing the underlying technology itself. The company has developed its own 5G core and OSS/BSS systems, which handle functions such as network operations, service provisioning, and billing.
Jio has also created its own end-to-end 5G technology stack. A major advantage of this is that the company can test and refine its technology on a live network serving millions of customers, rather than in a small laboratory.
