Patent Dispute: Nokia sues Oppo, accused of patent theft

A patent war has broken out between the world’s two biggest smartphone brands. Nokia has sued Chinese company Oppo for patent theft. Nokia has registered India, France, Germany and the UK in this regard. Only Germany has reported 23 cases. Nokia has made this case on Oppo with respect to Standard Essential Patent (SEPs) and Non-Standard Essential Patent, although it is not yet fully known which patent has created a ruckus.

A report said that Oppo and Nokia had a patent agreement under which Nokia was to get three Euros, or about Rs 270, for each phone. This money was to be given by Oppo to Nokia for the phones that were made under Nokia’s patent.

Nokia says that it had offered to renew the patent license but Oppo has turned it down but is using the patent. That’s why Nokia sued. Multiple reports also say that Oppo has described Nokia’s move as “shocking” and accused Nokia of disrespecting its patent license under fair and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms. Let us tell you that Nokia has many types of SEP and non-SEPs which are for 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G, WLAN and multimedia technology. Nokia holds 200 such patent licenses. Nokia recently ended its ongoing patent case with Lenovo and Daimler after years.
