Smartphones export: India’s made mobile in the hands of the world, not China-Vietnam, read the inside story of the ‘mobile revolution’

New Delhi: China and Vietnam are considered to be the hubs of smartphone manufacturing but this situation is going to change now. The reason for this is that India has made a huge leap in the export of smartphones. During this financial year, smartphone exports from the country are going to cross five billion dollars with a tremendous growth of 83 percent. Smartphones worth Rs 23,000 crore were exported from the country last year. This year this figure is estimated to reach Rs 42,000 crore or $ 5.6 billion. The credit is being given to the Government’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. Smartphones made in India are being exported to many developed countries of the world.

America’s giant tech company Apple (Apple) and South Korea’s Samsung have benefited the most from this scheme. Along with this, India has also emerged as a major center of smartphone manufacturing in the world along with China and Vietnam. Four years ago i.e. in 2017-18, smartphone exports from the country were just Rs 1,300 crore. It increased to Rs 11,200 crore in 2018-19 and then went up to Rs 27,200 crore in 2019-2020.

Supply interrupted from China

Smartphone exports from the country were affected due to production and supply related difficulties due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In the financial year 2020-21, it was Rs 23,000 crore. The broader electronic market is currently grappling with a number of difficulties. These include the lack of a semiconductor chip. Along with this, the market has also been affected due to lockdown and many other restrictions. In such a situation, the boom in the export of smartphones from India is being seen as an example.

Many important parts of smartphones are supplied from China but relations between India and China have not been good in the recent past. This is the reason why the supply of many parts from China is closed or very slow. Pankaj Mahindroo, chairman of the Indian Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA), an industry organization, said that despite the three waves of corona, reduction in workforce, lockdown and the worst crisis in the supply chain, smartphone exports are showing great growth.

Which countries are exporting

ICEA said that earlier India used to export smartphones to South Asia, Africa and Middle East and Eastern Europe but now smartphones from India are being shipped to many developed countries of the world. Mahindra said companies are now targeting the most competitive and advanced markets in Europe and Asia. These markets have the highest quality demand and the manufacturing units located in India are meeting this.

Apple and Samsung account for the largest share of smartphones exported from India. It is believed that Apple’s exports are expected to increase to Rs 12,000 crore. Among them, models like iPhone SE, iPhone 11 (iPhone 11) and iPhone 12 (iPhone 12) contribute significantly. Similarly, Samsung’s exports are also expected to increase to Rs 20,000 crore.
