Coca-Cola launches 100% recyclable bottles: Now 250ml and 750ml cold drinks will be available in rPET bottles.

Now Coca-Cola will come packaged in completely recyclable bottles. Coca-Cola India, the carbonated soft drink manufacturing company, has launched cold drink bottles of 250ml and 750ml segment made of 100% recyclable material.

The bottle is made from recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) material except for the lid and label. PET is completely food graded plastic. Coca-Cola, maker of Sprite and Minute Maid juice, has said that these bottles are being used in 40 markets around the world.

Only existing partners will make rPET bottles

The company has said that its existing bottle manufacturing partners Moon Beverages Limited and SLMG Limited are making these bottles. This is part of its target of 50% recycled content by 2030. The company said that the rPET bottle is approved by FSSAI, FDA and EFSA, the food safety authority of India, America and Europe.

Consumers can return empty bottles

Coca-Cola said in a statement that after drinking the drink, consumers can put the empty bottle in the drop-off point or reverse vending machine (RVM’s). Under the company’s ‘Return and Recycle’ initiative, e-commerce platform Zepto will collect empty bottles directly from consumers.

Sanjeev Aggarwal, chairman of Coca-Cola’s franchise bottling partner Moon Beverages, said, ‘PET plastic bottles have a life even after one use. This bottle is made of food graded plastic rPET, which can be recycled to make a new bottle again. This effort will help in adopting plastic circulation in India.

Company is working to increase recyclable content in packaging

Enrique Ackerman, vice president of technical and innovation for Coca-Cola India and Southwest Asia, said the company is working to increase the recyclable content in its packaging. He said that the company is also working to increase the collection and packaging of reusable bottles.
