Dispute with American MNC in India’s tractor market ends, finally had to settle with Indian company
The tussle in India’s tractor market for the last few years has finally ended. The years-old commercial and brand-related dispute between TAFE, a leading Indian company in the tractor and agricultural equipment sector, and US agri-machinery company AGCO has been resolved amicably. There is news of a historic settlement between the two.
All issues have been resolved
Eric P. Hansotia, Chairman, President and CEO of American multinational company AGCO Corporation, shared this information during the company’s Q2 2025 earnings call and said, “All our pending commercial, governance and shareholding issues with TAFE have been resolved.”
Management expressed gratitude
TAFE Chairman and Managing Director Mallika Srinivasan has thanked all the teams, lawyers and all stakeholders of TAFE. He has said that he is grateful for their tireless efforts and support in the amicable settlement and comprehensive resolution of all legal disputes related to the AGCO case.
What happened under the agreement?
Under this agreement, TAFE has bought back 20.7% stake in AGCO’s equity for $260 million. With this, TAFE has now become a wholly-owned unit of ‘Amalgamations Group’, a leading Chennai-based industrial group.
Who has the right to the Massey Ferguson brand?
A statement issued by TAFE states that under this agreement, TAFE will now have full and exclusive ownership of the ‘Massey Ferguson’ brand in India, Nepal and Bhutan. This includes all trademarks, rights, titles and goodwill associated with the brand. It is noteworthy that the dispute between TAFE and AGCO deepened in September 2024 when AGCO announced the termination of all existing agreements with TAFE, including the Massey Ferguson brand license. In response, TAFE filed a contempt petition in the court, accusing AGCO of violating previous court orders. But now that the agreement has been reached, there may be a serious change in the Indian tractor market.
Who is the leader of the Indian tractor market?
If we look at the data of April this year, the undisputed leader of the Indian tractor market is Mahindra & Mahindra. Its market share was 46.33 percent. It is followed by TAFE Group. Its market share that month was 17.40 percent. Sonalika was ranked third in the tractor market.
