Elon Musk’s Tesla gets cold response in India, orders for only 600 EVs received since launch
Tesla, one of the big electric vehicle (EV) companies, started its business in India in July after a long wait. This company of billionaire Elon Musk has received cold response from customers in the country. Tesla has received orders for more than 600 electric cars. This is a much higher figure than the company’s estimate. The company opened its first showroom in Mumbai. Recently it has also started a showroom in Delhi.
A media report has quoted sources with knowledge of this matter that Tesla plans to ship 350 to 500 EVs in the country this year. In the first half of this year, the company has delivered about 600 EVs every four hours at the international level. In comparison, the orders received by the company in India are very less. The first batch of Tesla’s electric cars in India can arrive from the company’s factory in China this month. Earlier, a Bloomberg News report had said that the company had initially set a target of using its entire quota of 2,500 cars.
Tesla was hoping to find success in India’s EV market due to the strength of its brand and Musk’s friendship with US President Donald Trump. In the last few months, Musk’s dispute with Trump and the weakening of bilateral relations between India and the US and the high prices of the company’s EVs have also affected its business in the country. The company did not respond to emailed questions seeking comment on this.
The company’s EVs will initially be delivered in Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Gurugram. Tesla has initially made its Model Y available in the country. The starting price of this electric SUV is Rs 59.89 lakh. It has been made available in two variants – rear wheel drive and long-range rear wheel drive. Its long-range rear wheel drive variant is priced at Rs 67.89 lakh. The company’s Model Y can get a range of 267 kilometers in just 15 minutes of charging with a supercharger. Some superchargers have been installed in Tesla showrooms.
