Google has changed its work-from-home rules, and employees will no longer be able to use them!

Google has released a new update for its employees. During the COVID-19 pandemic, most companies offered their employees the option of working from home. Google implemented its Work From Anywhere (WFA) policy at the same time. Now, the company is introducing new restrictions on this policy, which will reduce the benefits available to employees. According to the new rules, employees can no longer use their WFA to work from home or from Google offices located in different states or countries. Previously, employees had the option to work remotely from any location outside their main office for up to four weeks per year, and could use these days as needed. Let’s explore this in detail.

Under the new rules, WFA days cannot be used for working from home or nearby locations. They are limited to locations away from both home and the main office. According to the new rules, if an employee takes one day off work in a week or five days off work, the entire week will be considered WFA. This means that if an employee works from home on Mondays, a full week will be deducted from their annual WFA, regardless of whether they work in the office for the remaining four days.

Restrictions on working in other countries and states

Google employees will no longer be able to work in countries or states other than their own office. The company made these WFA changes due to legal and financial reasons. This could have caused tax and time zone issues, as employees may have to work during fixed hours based on the time zone of their remote location.

John Casey, Google’s President of Performance and Rewards, discussed this update in a recent meeting, stating that this policy was designed to address the needs of Google employees during the pandemic. He explained that this policy was always intended to be implemented on a weekly basis and not used as a work-from-home option during a regular hybrid workweek.

This move comes as Google is already facing increasing pressure on its remote workforce. Earlier this year, the company warned employees that remote roles could be eliminated if they didn’t strictly adhere to the hybrid schedule.
