Humans Unemployed in the Age of AI! Meta Lays Off 600 People from Its AI Lab

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the world, it is also rapidly taking a toll on human jobs. Tech giant Meta has announced a major reshuffle in its AI division, laying off approximately 600 employees. This move has sparked a wave of layoffs across Silicon Valley.

Meta is undergoing a restructuring of its AI department. The company says that its long-running AI projects had become increasingly bureaucratic, slowing decision-making. Consequently, Meta has decided to cut its former FAIR AI research unit and AI product and infrastructure teams.

Statement from Meta’s Chief AI Officer

Alexander Wang, Meta’s Chief AI Officer, stated in an internal memo that downsizing the team will speed up decision-making. Each member will now have more responsibility and a more effective role. Wang also added that affected employees will have the opportunity to apply for new roles in other departments within the company.

TBD Lab

Amid the layoffs, Meta’s focus is now on its TBD Lab. This is a new AI research center that will be central to the company’s future mission of superintelligence. Meta recently recruited prominent figures like OpenAI research scientist Ananya Kumar and Thinking Machines co-founder Andrew Tullock for this lab.

$15 Billion Investment in AI

Meta is currently investing approximately $15 billion (₹1.25 lakh crore) in its AI infrastructure. The company says that a small and agile team is crucial to creating new and effective AI models and products in the future.
