New Aadhaar app launched, details can be shared via QR code: No physical card required, you can store Aadhaar details of up to 5 family members in your phone.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has launched a new mobile app to digitally manage Aadhaar cards.

With this app, you can now always carry your Aadhaar with you on your phone. Unlike the old m-Aadhaar app, it makes verification as easy as UPI payments.

You can store up to 5 Aadhaar profiles on a single phone. This app is available for Android and iOS users.

Features of the new Aadhaar app

  • Carry Aadhaar on your phone: Your e-Aadhaar will always be with you, eliminating the need for a paper copy.
  • Face scan sharing: Sharing your ID requires a face scan; it’s as secure as a PIN or OTP.
  • Secure login: The app opens with biometric authentication.
  • Multi-language support: Available in multiple languages, including Hindi and English.
  • Offline use: You can access your Aadhaar even when you don’t have internet.

The old Aadhaar app already existed, so why was the new one introduced?

Until now, the m-Aadhaar app was used. It focused on checking details, downloading digital Aadhaar cards, and ordering PVC cards. The new app will allow users to scan and share their Aadhaar information while keeping it secure.

  • Still use mAadhaar for PDF downloads or PVC cards.
  • For generating a virtual ID or certain updates, the UIDAI portal or mAadhaar is preferable.
  • The new app is privacy-first, sharing only essential information through selective disclosure.

What benefits will users gain from the new app?

  • Hotel check-in, SIM activation, or bank KYC will be faster.
  • Family management will be easier, with everyone’s details on one phone.
  • Selective sharing will prevent personal data from being exposed.
