NHAI provides relief to millions: KYC process no longer mandatory for FASTag
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to discontinue the mandatory Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for issuing FASTags for new cars, jeeps, and vans from February 1, 2026. The aim is to enhance public convenience and eliminate the difficulties faced by highway users after FASTag activation. NHAI stated that this change will bring relief to millions of ordinary road users.
Previously, they faced inconvenience and delays due to the vehicle identification (KYV) process after FASTag activation, even if they possessed all valid vehicle documents. The KYV process will no longer be routinely mandatory for previously issued car FASTags. NHAI stated that KYV will only be required in cases where complaints arise regarding incorrect issuance of FASTags or any kind of misuse.
Verification Process
If no complaints are received, KYV will not be required for previously issued car FASTags. NHAI also stated that it has strengthened the verification process by banks before FASTag activation and has now made it mandatory to verify based on vehicle data as per statutory requirements before activating the FASTag.
