ChatGPT maker OpenAI joins forces with Tata Group to build AI data center in India
OpenAI, a major player in the artificial intelligence (AI) segment, plans to expand its business in India. The American company has partnered with Tata Group to build an AI data center in India. OpenAI is the first customer of Tata Consultancy Services’ (TCS) HyperVault data center business.
During the AI Impact Summit in Delhi, OpenAI announced that it will open new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru this year. The company, which creates the globally used AI chatbot ChatGPT, currently has an office in New Delhi. The company stated that the new office in India will allow it to better meet the needs of its users and partners. Recently, OpenAI has partnered with Indian companies such as JioHotstar, Pine Labs, MakeMyTrip, and PhonePe.
The Tata Group plans to make ChatGPT Enterprise available to its workers in the coming years. It will begin with TCS workers. TCS, the country’s largest software maker, is preparing to use OpenAI’s Codex for AI-related software development. OpenAI stated, “India is already rapidly advancing in the use of AI. The country’s tech talent and strong government support will strengthen this industry. We are working to build infrastructure, skills, and local partnerships in India.”
OpenAI, which has rapidly expanded its business over the past few years, stated that ChatGPT has more than 100 million weekly users in India. The company’s data center, being built with the Tata Group, will initially have a capacity of 100 megawatts, expandable to one gigawatt. This will enable the company’s advanced models to be safely operated in the country. OpenAI is also preparing to introduce its certification program in India, which will begin with TCS. The company has also tied up with leading educational institutions like Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, University of Petroleum and Energy Studies and Pearl Academy.
