Kumar Mangalam Birla Appointed Non-Executive Chairman of Vodafone Idea: Can the Debt-Ridden Company Recover?
Kumar Mangalam Birla has once again taken the helm of the debt-laden telecom company, Vodafone Idea. The company has appointed him as its Non-Executive Chairman, effective from May 5, 2026. According to a report by PTI, citing the company’s regulatory filings, he has succeeded Ravinder Takkar. Takkar has stepped down from the post of Chairman but will continue to serve as the Non-Executive Vice Chairman, assisting the company during this transition phase.
A Major Challenge for the Company
Vodafone Idea has been grappling with financial distress for a considerable period. Following the Supreme Court’s 2019 verdict on AGR (Adjusted Gross Revenue), the company was saddled with a massive burden of outstanding dues; liabilities amounting to approximately ₹53,000 crore further eroded its financial stability. Competition within the telecom market has also remained a significant challenge for the company. The introduction of affordable data plans and free calling offers by Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio had a profound impact on Vodafone Idea’s business operations.
However, the company has received some relief from the government. Following a re-evaluation of the AGR dues, the total outstanding amount was reduced by approximately 27%—from the original ₹87,695 crore to ₹64,046 crore. Despite this, market analysts believe that the relief provided falls short of expectations. According to IIFL Capital, the relief could have been far more substantial had there been a waiver on interest and penalties.
The Company Must Pay Installments
Under the stipulated payment structure, the company is required to clear its AGR dues over a period of 10 years. It must pay a minimum annual installment of ₹100 crore from FY2031-32 to FY2034-35, followed by annual installments of ₹10,608 crore from FY2035-36 to FY2040-41. Furthermore, for outstanding dues related to FY2018 and FY2019, an additional ₹124 crore must be paid annually from March 2026 to March 2031. According to analysts, spectrum dues also continue to pose a major challenge for the company. BofA Global Research estimates that Vi will have to make payments amounting to approximately ₹49,000 crore over the next three years, during which its liabilities are expected to rise rapidly.
Despite government relief, the company’s financial position remains weak. In the nine-month period ending December 2025, Vodafone Idea incurred a loss of ₹17,418 crore, while its net worth declined to a negative ₹87,744 crore.
