AI Will Lead to Worker Shortages, Not Unemployment: Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos; Warns Water Scarcity Could Stall AI’s Progress

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos believes that AI will create new jobs rather than eliminate existing ones. He stated that the technology would accelerate the pace of innovation, potentially leading to a labor shortage in the future instead of unemployment. Additionally, he noted that water scarcity could hinder the advancement of artificial intelligence.

Speaking at the ‘VivaTech 2026’ conference in Paris, Bezos shared his views on the global debate surrounding AI and employment. He remarked that AI would expand the scope of human creativity by simplifying the process of identifying and solving new problems.

Bezos predicted that AI would lead to labor shortages because it would enable people to identify and address a greater number of problems. Dave Limp, Chief Executive of Blue Origin, also participated in the discussion.

Bezos Discusses New Venture ‘Prometheus’

Bezos spoke about his new venture, ‘Prometheus,’ describing it as an AI startup aimed at developing an ‘Artificial General Engineer.’

He expressed hope that such technology would significantly accelerate the pace of the innovation cycle, making it possible to work on ideas that were previously considered impossible.

Bezos stated that if the ‘dream-build loop’ (the cycle of conceiving and creating) could be accelerated, any idea would become feasible. We would then be limited not by our capabilities, but by our imaginations.

Cooling Resources Essential for Super-Intelligence

Bezos also addressed the environmental impact of AI, specifically the massive demand for water and electricity required for data centers. He emphasized that realizing AI’s full potential would require prioritizing specific resources for its infrastructure. Biological limits are real, but digital potential is limitless.

If we withhold cooling resources (water and cooling infrastructure) from our data infrastructure merely to maintain basic human comfort, we delay the birth of a super-intelligence capable of solving all our resource-related problems right from the start. This statement by Bezos has sparked a new debate regarding the balance between data center expansion and environmental concerns.

Going to the Moon to Live, Not Just to Visit

Beyond artificial intelligence, Bezos also shared his long-term vision for space exploration. He stated that the Moon would serve as the first step toward establishing permanent human settlements beyond Earth.
