Uber Lays Off Another 10% of Customer Service Staff; Here’s the Latest Update
Ride-hailing company Uber has made a major decision to boost its use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The company has cut 10% of the jobs in its customer service operations. This move aims to simplify the company’s organizational structure.
The layoffs, which took place on Wednesday, affected the Community Operations team. A company spokesperson stated that Uber intends to streamline its teams and foster better collaboration among employees in the office. Uber plans to maximize its use of AI. Megha Yethatika, Uber’s Vice President of Global Community Operations, wrote in a memo that the company’s structure had become overly complex.
She noted that while the use of AI has already begun, a robust and organized structure is essential to fully leverage its benefits. The company has also directed remote workers to report to hub offices, a move that is part of Uber’s “return-to-office” initiative.
Why are these layoffs happening?
Uber is taking this step to simplify its teams and enhance in-office collaboration. The company aims to make greater use of Artificial Intelligence. According to Megha Yethatika, the company’s structure is currently complex and fragmented; strengthening and organizing this structure is a prerequisite for fully capitalizing on AI. This move is designed to improve efficiency and accelerate workflows in the long run.
Is this the first time this has happened?
This marks the second major round of layoffs at Uber attributed to AI-related shifts. Previously, in June, the company cut 23% of its Human Resources (HR) team, although this represented less than 1% of Uber’s total workforce of 34,000 employees. In May, Uber had stated that it was reducing new hiring due to the adoption of AI. Despite this, the company is currently recruiting for over 500 positions listed on its website. Engineers are needed, especially for the robotaxi partnership.
