Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal Makes Major Announcement: ₹1 Lakh Crore Investment Planned for Odisha
Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal made a significant announcement following a meeting with Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. He unveiled an investment drive worth ₹1 lakh crore for the state. This investment encompasses projects related to aluminum, mining, refining, and downstream manufacturing. He stated that these initiatives could generate employment for at least 50,000 people.
₹1 Lakh Crore Investment in Odisha
Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal announced an investment of ₹1 lakh crore in Odisha. He stated that the investment would fund projects involving aluminum, mining, refining, and downstream manufacturing. Agarwal made this announcement on Saturday after meeting Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. He affirmed the group’s readiness to invest in projects that boost industrial activity and employment in the state. He also urged for the expediting of land allocation and government approvals to ensure these projects can move forward within the next two-and-a-half to three years.
Plans for a New Refinery and Smelter
Anil Agarwal stated that Vedanta plans to develop an additional refinery and a smelter in Rayagada. The company also intends to expand its operations related to bauxite and aluminum production. Concurrently, there are plans to expand the company’s existing operations in Jharsuguda. Agarwal noted that if government support continues, work on these projects could commence immediately.
2-Million-Tonne Plant in Jharsuguda
Regarding the proposed expansion in Jharsuguda, Anil Agarwal mentioned that the company is considering setting up a plant with a capacity of 2 million tonnes. Approximately 500 acres of land are being made available alongside the existing power plant. He stated that this expansion could generate at least 50,000 direct and indirect jobs. He noted that the pace of project implementation would depend on the speed of land allocation and government approvals.
Emphasis on Boosting Aluminium-Based Industries in Odisha
Anil Agarwal highlighted the need for greater development of aluminium-based industries in Odisha. He mentioned that a large number of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)—manufacturing components for sectors such as automobiles, aviation, railways, and transport—could be attracted to the state. He stated that Vedanta would supply power and aluminium to companies setting up operations in the state. Additionally, providing employment to local residents would be a priority.
Plans for a Hospital and a Digital University
Anil Agarwal also emphasized strengthening social infrastructure alongside industrial development. He outlined plans for a large hospital, a digital university, and a research-oriented hospital for tribal communities. He stated that the proposed research center would aim to develop medicines for major diseases like cancer.
Focus on Employment for Tribal Communities
The Vedanta chief emphasized the importance of creating employment opportunities for tribal communities and expanding industrial activities. He sought government support to advance these initiatives. He stated that the overarching objective is to accelerate the pace of industrialization in Odisha and generate employment opportunities for the people across the state.
