Google’s warning to those working from home, come to the office for 3 days, otherwise quit the job!

Five years after the Covid pandemic, Google is now focusing on those employees who are still working completely remotely. According to some media reports, the company has told such employees that if they do not follow the hybrid work schedule (coming to the office at least 3 days a week), then their jobs may be affected.

According to NBC News, many departments of Google have started sending notices to their remote staff. Some of these people were already approved for remote work. Now they have been told to come to the nearest office and start working, otherwise they will have to opt for a Voluntary Exit Package (VEP).

The report states that Google says that this is not a company-wide policy, but decisions taken at the team-level. However, employees who live within a radius of 50 miles are required to adopt hybrid mode. HR department staff will have to return to the office by mid-April, otherwise their role may be terminated. Employees who live outside 50 miles and are already remote approved can remain in the old mode, but if they apply for a new role within the company, they will also have to adopt hybrid work.

Reports also say that some teams have also been offered relocation allowances so that they can work closer to the office.

Google started offering voluntary buyouts to U.S. based full-time staff as early as 2025. A major reason behind this is believed to be heavy investment in AI, for which the company is cutting its operational expenses. After large-scale layoffs in 2023, Google has also made targeted cuts in many teams.

Company co-founder Sergey Brin said in an internal memo in February that AI workers should be in the office 60 hours a week because “we need to turbocharge the AI race now.”
