Major Changes Loom at Meta: Plans to Lay Off 10% of Staff, Shift 7,000 Employees to AI Division

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has shared details regarding its planned layoffs scheduled for this week. In a memo sent to employees, the company stated that organizational changes would be implemented alongside a reduction in its global workforce. The primary objective of these changes is to enhance the company’s AI workflows. This restructuring constitutes a pivotal part of the company’s future strategy.

According to a Reuters report, Meta—Facebook’s parent company—plans to lay off 10 percent of its workforce on Wednesday. Furthermore, there are indications that even larger-scale reductions could occur later this year.

7,000 Employees to be Transferred to AI Teams

In a memo reviewed by Reuters, Meta’s Chief People Officer, Janelle Gale, informed employees that the company would transfer 7,000 staff members to new initiatives focused on AI workflows. Additionally, certain managerial positions are set to be eliminated. She further noted that various leaders would be announcing these organizational changes.

The memo stated: “As organizational leadership worked through these changes, many teams incorporated AI-native design principles into their new structures. We have now reached a stage where many organizations can operate with a flatter structure.” This will involve the formation of smaller “pod” and “cohort” teams, enabling them to operate with greater agility and increased accountability. A Meta spokesperson declined to comment on this plan.

AI-Driven Changes Fuel Restructuring

These changes form part of Meta’s broader restructuring plan for the current year. The company is increasing its investment in AI with the aim of placing AI agents at the core of both its consumer products and its internal operational processes.

Impact on a Total of 20% of Employees

According to reports, the combined impact of layoffs and internal transfers could affect approximately 20 percent of Meta’s total workforce. As part of this process, the company has also eliminated 6,000 open job roles. As of March 2026, Meta had approximately 77,986 employees.

Growing Employee Dissent

Resentment among employees regarding these changes within Meta is also on the rise. Many employees have expressed their protest by putting up posters in the office, while others have openly voiced their displeasure on the company’s internal platform, Workplace. According to reports, more than 1,000 employees have signed a petition opposing the company’s use of mouse-tracking software. Employees allege that this technology is being used to train AI models on how humans interact with computers.

Rising Layoffs in the Tech Sector Due to AI

Meta is not the only company undergoing restructuring due to AI. This year, several major U.S. tech companies have reduced their workforce as a result of AI automation.
