Apple’s Foldable iPhone Manufacturing Could Start Soon; Launch Planned for September
Apple, the maker of the globally popular iPhone, could launch its first foldable smartphone this year. This device might be named the “iPhone Ultra.” Leaks have provided some details regarding the foldable iPhone’s specifications, and Apple has already approved key hardware components for it.
A report by *The Elec* indicates that Apple has approved essential components for the smartphone, including the display, chassis, and mechanical structure. Apple conducted the first round of trial manufacturing for the iPhone Ultra in April, and development is proceeding according to schedule. Foxconn, Apple’s largest contract manufacturer, could begin mass production of the foldable smartphone by the end of July. However, there are reports of issues regarding the hinge mechanism. 3D printing technology might be used for the hinge to significantly minimize the crease on the display; the company previously utilized 3D-printed cases for the Apple Watch.
A recent report by *The Elec* also states that Apple has placed an order with Samsung Display for the OLED modules required for the foldable iPhone. Samsung Display has already initiated preparations at its Vietnam facility. Approximately 3 million panels could be manufactured for the iPhone Ultra this year. Apple had set a minimum yield rate requirement of 70 percent before approving mass production of the panels. Reports suggest that Samsung Display has met this benchmark, achieving a yield rate exceeding 80 percent. Samsung Display is likely to be the exclusive supplier of OLED panels for the foldable iPhone. Apple plans to launch the iPhone Ultra alongside the iPhone 18 series in September. The foldable iPhone could feature a 7.58-inch inner screen and a 5.25-inch outer display. When unfolded, the smartphone’s user interface might resemble that of an iPad. Sales of foldable smartphones have grown rapidly over the past few years, with Samsung holding the largest market share in this segment.
