Adani Defence Signs Agreement with Indo-Russian Rifles for AK-203 Ammunition Supply; Here Are the Details
Adani Defence and Aerospace has entered into a five-year agreement with Indo-Russian Rifles. This agreement concerns the AK-203 assault rifles being manufactured in India and entails the supply of indigenous 7.62x39mm ammunition. This move will establish an integrated domestic supply chain for the India-Russia rifle program.
Adani Defence will supply the small-caliber ammunition required for the AK-203 program over a period of five years, ensuring a continuous supply of ammunition throughout the contract term. Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL) was established in 2019.
It manufactures AK-203 rifles under an India-Russia inter-governmental agreement. Its manufacturing facility is located at Korwa in the Amethi district of Uttar Pradesh. The Ministry of Defence selected IRRPL for the indigenous production of the AK-203. The government had signed a contract with the company in December 2021 for 601,427 AK-203 rifles.
How significant is this for defense manufacturing in the country?
This new agreement will link locally manufactured rifles with locally produced ammunition. Adani Defence has established capabilities for manufacturing small-caliber ammunition in India, including a production facility in Kanpur. The agreement will strengthen domestic capabilities within the small arms supply chain and boost the government’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) initiative. It will also reduce reliance on external sources for the weapon system.
