Special Team Formed Following eMudhra Data Leak: Security Codes Compromised; Government Assures No Impact on Indian Digital Signatures
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has constituted a special team to investigate a technical glitch at eMudhra, a company that provides digital security solutions.
The government has clarified that the issue is confined solely to the company’s international operations. Indian websites and applications remain entirely secure; the public is advised to disregard rumors circulating on social media.
The company operates in two primary areas:
Digital Signature and eSign services in India: These operations are conducted under the direct supervision of the Government of India. Your digital signatures remain completely secure and are unaffected.
Issuance of security certificates for international websites: The technical glitch occurred exclusively within this international segment, resulting in the leakage of certain security codes.
System Glitch Led to Weak Security Codes
According to eMudhra, a system malfunction resulted in the generation of weak security codes. A cybersecurity expert alerted major browser providers—including Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Mozilla—that these vulnerable codes could be easily compromised by hackers using AI.
Tech Companies Take Immediate Action
Google issued an immediate update for its Chrome browser to block the affected security codes.
Mozilla suspended all six affected digital certificates issued by eMudhra to ensure the continued safety of users.
eMudhra’s Clarification: No Data Theft or System Breach
eMudhra has stated that its core systems remain fully secure and that no customer data has been stolen.
According to the company:
Minimal Impact: The international segment affected by this issue accounts for only 1% of the company’s total revenue. Immediate Solution: The company is providing new, secure digital certificates to its affected international clients, ensuring that their operations continue without any disruption.
Government Warning: Do Not Spread Panic
The IT Ministry has stated that some individuals are spreading unnecessary fear and rumors on social media regarding this matter; these should be disregarded.
The government’s cybersecurity team and experts are conducting a joint investigation. Once the investigation is complete, all accurate information and facts will be made public.
