Meta Asks Employees to Resign: Offers Exit Package with 80% Salary; Company to Provide Training and Support for Starting New Businesses
Following in the footsteps of Google and Microsoft, Meta—the parent company of Facebook and Instagram—has begun efforts to cut costs and reduce its workforce.
According to a report by the French media outlet *La Lettre*, Meta has offered employees in France the option of a “voluntary exit”—resigning from their positions of their own accord.
Having recently laid off thousands of employees, the company is now offering select staff the option to resign in exchange for a compensation package.
Under this scheme, those who choose to leave will receive 80% of their salary. Additionally, Meta will provide training to help them acquire new skills and offer comprehensive support for starting a new business.
Impact on 100 Employees in France
Meta currently employs approximately 300 people in its French office. According to the report, one in every three employees—roughly 100 individuals—could potentially opt to leave.
However, Meta has not yet specified how many employees are expected to resign. Furthermore, it remains unclear which departments or job roles this offer applies to.
What Is Meta’s Voluntary Exit Plan?
Meta’s plan differs from the schemes implemented by Google and Microsoft. The company is utilizing a specific French labor regulation known as an “RCC” (*Rupture Conventionnelle Collective*). Under this framework, the company and employee unions negotiate the terms for voluntary departures.
Once the terms are established, employees can choose to resign of their own free will, without any coercion—meaning this is not a forced layoff. Employees who wish to take advantage of this scheme must submit their applications by November 5.
More Than Two Months’ Salary for Every Year of Service
Meta is providing a compensation package to employees who choose to resign. Employees who choose to resign will receive 2.15 months’ worth of salary for every year they have worked at the company.
For example, if an employee has worked at Meta for 5 years, they will receive a lump sum equivalent to approximately 11 months (10.75 months) of salary. This payout will be calculated based on 80% of the employee’s gross salary.
Support for starting a business and acquiring new skills
Meta is not just providing a financial payout to departing employees; it is also looking out for their future. Those who resign will be offered free training by the company to acquire new skills.
Furthermore, for those who wish to launch their own business or startup, Meta will provide comprehensive support and guidance.
Understanding why tech companies are making cuts
The global tech sector is currently experiencing a slowdown, with the industry’s focus shifting heavily toward AI. Consequently, major companies are taking steps to reduce their expenses.
Before Meta, other tech giants like Google and Microsoft also offered employees in the U.S. and Europe the option to voluntarily resign or transition to other roles.
Meta itself has laid off thousands of employees on several occasions over the past two years.
