Twitter appointed interim chief compliance officer; parliamentary committee will also hear the side on June 18

Days after the central government issued notice to Twitter, a parliamentary committee headed by Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Friday asked top officials of the micro-blogging site to record statements and submit a report on prevention of misuse of the social media platform. Apart from this, Twitter has informed that it has appointed interim Chief Compliance Officer under the new IT rules. Along with this, it has also said that the details will be shared with the Ministry of Information and Technology.

Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Information and Technology has also summoned several social media giants, including Facebook and Twitter, to present their stand on the issue related to misuse of social media platforms and protection of civil rights.

According to a notice issued in connection with the meeting of the Standing Committee to be held on June 18, its agenda is to hear the views of representatives of Twitter followed by protection of the rights of citizens with special emphasis on safety of women in the digital space and social/online media. The notice of the meeting has been issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat.

It is noteworthy that Twitter recently faced heavy criticism when it published a ‘blueprint’ unauthenticated the personal accounts of several senior functionaries of the country, including Vice President of India M Venkaiah Naidu and RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) chief Mohan Bhagvat .

At the same time, regarding the new information rules, Twitter has said that interim Chief Compliance Officer has been appointed, details will be shared with the Ministry of Information Technology soon. A Twitter spokesperson said that every effort is being made to comply with the new guidelines. The Ministry of Information Technology is being informed about the progress at every step.
