This decision of India will shock China, the rules of laptop and computer import will be changed again.

New Delhi: The government has changed the licensing norms on import of laptops and computers. Now an online clearance system has been created for importers of these products. Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) Santosh Kumar Sarangi said on Thursday that the purpose of the new licensing or approval system is mainly to monitor the import of these products. To ensure that they are coming from a reliable source. He said that this system will be implemented with immediate effect.

Sarangi said that keeping in mind the concerns of the people related to import restrictions, some changes have been made in the policy and an ‘end-to-end’ online system has been started for the importers. Sarangi said that this system will provide facility to the importers to fill the contact details without going anywhere. The new licensing regime applies to laptops, personal computers (including tablet computers), microcomputers, large or mainframe computers and certain data processing machines.

Why is this decision of the government important?

This announcement is also important because the government had announced on August 4 that with the aim of promoting domestic manufacturing and cutting imports from countries like China, importers will need a license to import these items from November 1.

What needs to be done for the license

DGFT said the importer can apply on the system to obtain an import license. There will be no restrictions on quantity, price or any country. The Revenue Department is also involved in the preparation of the new system and the entire application process will take about 10 minutes. The license will be issued automatically.
