Omegle Shutdown: Popular live video chatting site closed, company took decision after complaint

Popular live video chat site Omegle has announced the closure of its services. Omegle was providing its service for 14 years. It is being said that after receiving complaints of online abuse, Omegle has decided to stop its services. Omegle users had increased significantly during the Corona period. There were all types of users on Omegle from children to adults.

Company founder Leaf K Brooks said in a statement that operating the website was no longer economically or psychologically sustainable. The founder’s statement comes at a time when social media platforms are facing increasing scrutiny from regulators around the world.

Earlier this week, Ofcom released its first guidance for tech platforms to comply with the UK Online Protection Act, and the communications regulator placed an emphasis on online grooming. An American has accused Omegle of unfairly pairing him with a pedophile.

According to the claim, a lawsuit was filed against Omegle in November 2021 regarding the account of a minor user. In court, Omegle’s legal team argued that the website was not at fault for what happened. On Thursday, Brooks acknowledged that some people misused his platform, including to commit heinous crimes.
