India Becomes a Major Market for iPhones; Apple to Open Second Store in Mumbai

The globally popular iPhone is seeing increased sales in India. American device maker Apple plans to expand its presence in the country. The company has announced that it will open a second store in Mumbai. Apple’s manufacturing presence in India has also grown significantly in recent years.

During the earnings call for the first quarter of fiscal year 2026, Apple’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Tim Cook, announced the company’s plan to open a second store in Mumbai. Last December, the company opened its second store in the Delhi-NCR region, located in Noida. However, Cook did not disclose the location of the new Mumbai store. Earlier reports suggested that the store might be opened in Borivali, Mumbai. The company’s first store in India was opened in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC).

Cook stated that the company achieved record revenue in the December quarter. Apple’s revenue in India grew in double digits. A media report also indicated that Apple plans to open a corporate office in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Sales in India grew rapidly last year. The company shipped approximately 14 million units of iPhones in the country. This increased Apple’s market share to nine percent, up from approximately seven percent the previous year.

This marks Apple’s best annual performance in India. However, the overall smartphone market in the country remained largely unchanged last year, with approximately 152 million units shipped. Apple’s iPhone 17 series, launched last year, received a positive response from customers. Sales of the iPhone 16 series also remained strong. Increased retail presence and easy financing options like no-cost EMIs have significantly contributed to the company’s sales growth. The company has also increased its manufacturing in India. In the last few years, the company has exported over $50 billion worth of Made in India iPhones. In India, iPhones are assembled at the factories of Apple’s contract manufacturers Foxconn and Tata Electronics, a part of the Tata Group.
