Amazon has taken a major step to challenge SpaceX’s Starlink in the satellite internet sector. The company has sought approval from the US regulator, the FCC, to launch 5,105 new Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. These satellites aim to provide not just broadband internet, but also Direct-to-Device (D2D) services—such as voice calls, messaging, data, and emergency connectivity—directly to smartphones. Amazon plans to begin deploying this network in 2028.
This new initiative is part of Amazon’s satellite business, previously known as Project Kuiper, which initially focused on satellite broadband internet. Now, the company intends to expand this platform to enter the direct-to-phone connectivity market, where competitors like SpaceX’s Starlink, AST SpaceMobile, and Lynk Global are already active.

According to CNBC, the application filed with the FCC states that Amazon aims to build a separate network of 5,105 new LEO satellites. The company says this network will collaborate with mobile operators to provide smartphone connectivity in areas beyond the reach of traditional mobile tower networks. To achieve this, Amazon plans to utilize Globalstar’s satellite spectrum and infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the satellite internet market in India is still in its nascent stage. Although Starlink has obtained the requisite licenses in India, its commercial services have not yet commenced on a large scale; work is ongoing regarding spectrum allocation, pricing, and rollout strategies. Additionally, Bharti Airtel is working on satellite broadband services through Eutelsat OneWeb, while Reliance Jio is strengthening its presence in this sector through a partnership with SES.
Thus, even though it may take some time for Amazon Leo to arrive in India, its entry could trigger fierce competition among Starlink, Amazon Leo, OneWeb, and Jio-backed satellite services. This would likely open up new avenues for internet and mobile connectivity in remote areas.
