IndiGo Gets a New CEO: Former British Airways CEO William Walsh to Take the Helm

India’s largest airline, IndiGo, announced on Tuesday (March 31) the appointment of William Walsh—the former head of British Airways and IATA—as the company’s new CEO. This appointment will become effective following the receipt of regulatory approvals. Subsequently, Walsh is set to join IndiGo in August 2026.

William Walsh is an experienced airline leader and currently serves as the Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). According to IndiGo, Walsh’s tenure at IATA will conclude on July 31, and he is expected to join IndiGo by August 3.

William Walsh has previously served as the CEO of British Airways and the International Airlines Group (IAG). The IAG umbrella encompasses airlines such as British Airways, Aer Lingus, Iberia, and Vueling.

IndiGo’s Managing Director, Rahul Bhatia, stated, “As we enter a new phase of growth and transformation for IndiGo, I am delighted that Willie is joining our team. He is a distinguished and seasoned aviation leader. He possesses a global perspective, proven experience in building strong customer-centric airlines, and deep industry knowledge—qualities that make him the ideal choice to steer IndiGo to new heights.”

IndiGo noted that under Walsh’s leadership, the airline will embark on the next phase of its growth and expansion. His experience and global network are expected to further bolster IndiGo’s strategic plans and operational capabilities.

This appointment marks a significant shift within IndiGo’s leadership team, coming after the company undertook a search for a new CEO following the sudden departure of Pieter Elbers. Walsh’s arrival is being viewed as a pivotal moment for the airline, particularly as IndiGo continues to expand its network and international operations.

Thus, William Walsh’s leadership is poised to play a crucial role in IndiGo’s future growth and strategic expansion.
