Snapchat Hit by Layoffs: Hundreds of Jobs Eliminated—Why Is the Company Downsizing?

While Snap’s shares have witnessed a surge, the company has simultaneously decided to reduce its workforce. Reports suggest that the company is poised to lay off a portion of its staff very soon. These job losses are being attributed to AI. The company has recently announced plans to lay off 16 percent of its employees.

Letter from the CEO

Notably, on Wednesday, Snap’s shares saw a jump of approximately 7%. This occurred as the company finalized plans to cut its global workforce by up to 16%, citing the need for AI-driven efficiencies. In a letter addressed to employees, CEO Evan Spiegel stated that these cuts would impact approximately 1,000 employees, and at least 300 vacant positions would also be eliminated.

AI Becomes the Adversary for Employees

In his letter to the staff, Spiegel explained: “I previously noted that Snap is navigating a pivotal phase—one that demands a new, faster, and more efficient way of working, alongside a commitment to achieving profitable growth. We believe that the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence empower our teams to minimize repetitive tasks, accelerate our pace, and provide enhanced support to our community, partners, and advertisers.”

He further added: “We have already observed smaller teams utilizing AI tools to make meaningful progress on several key initiatives, including Snapchat+, improvements in the performance of our advertising platform, and efficiency enhancements within our Snap Light infrastructure.”

Employees to Receive Four Months’ Salary

The company acknowledges that these decisions are difficult for them as well, but asserts that, with an eye toward the future, such steps are necessary. The company has also affirmed its unwavering commitment to supporting the employees who are being laid off. Employees will be provided with four months’ salary, health insurance, equity vesting, and career transition support. Spiegel stated that the layoffs will reduce the company’s annual costs by more than $500 million by the second half of 2026. Snap has projected revenue of $1.5 billion for the first quarter, representing a 12% increase on an annual basis.
