Ratan Tata: Semiconductor manufacturing in Assam will put the state on the global map, said Ratan Tata

Tata Group veteran Ratan Tata has given his reaction on setting up semiconductor manufacturing facility in Assam. Industrialist and former chairman of Tata Sons Ratan Tata has said that semiconductor manufacturing in Assam will put the state on the global map. Tata Group has invested Rs 27,000 crore for a semiconductor plant in Jagiroad, Assam. Ratan Tata is the honorary chairman for life of Tata Sons.

Ratan Tata posted on Instagram attaching photos of him, Himanta Biswa Sarma and Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran, “The investment being made in Assam has enabled the state to provide complex treatment and care to cancer patients. Today, The Government of Assam in partnership with the Tata Group will make the state a major player in the semiconductor sector.”

Tata has already set up several cancer care hospitals across the state in collaboration with the Government of Assam. Ratan Tata said, “This new development will put Assam on the global map. We would like to thank Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his support and vision that made all this possible.”

Country’s first semiconductor chip expected to be ready by December

Earlier, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had assured that the country’s first semiconductor chip will be ready by December 2024 and it will be the first Made in India chip. He had said that we had made the first attempt at semiconductor manufacturing in 1962 itself, but unless you have the right policy and the right conviction, it may not be possible. Prime Minister Modi believes that for a developing India we need electronics manufacturing. From TVs to power electronics, we need semiconductors in everything.

On March 13, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of three semiconductor manufacturing plants to be built at a cost of about Rs 1.25 lakh crore. Of these, two plants are being built in Gujarat while one plant is being built in Assam. Tata Group is setting up two of these three plants. Tata Group will contribute in setting up one plant each in both the states.

Semiconductor industry in India is still at a nascent stage

The semiconductor industry in India is still at a nascent stage. Various local and multinational companies intend to exploit its huge potential. Tata will set up a semiconductor unit in Morigaon, Assam under the name of Semiconductor Assembly and Test Private Limited (“TSAT”). The facility, with a capacity to produce 48 million chips per day, is being constructed at a cost of Rs 27,000 crore.

The segments that will be covered here are automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, telecommunications and mobile phones. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was present during the foundation stone laying ceremony, had said that industries in India did not give proper place to the North-Eastern region for businesses during the previous industrial revolutions. Now positive steps are being taken in this direction.
